The first group will begin the tour at 7 p.m., and the last group will depart no later than 7:30 p.m. each evening. The tour will take approximately 90 minutes
Commercial Hotel – 1
The Commercial Hotel was built in 1852. It was a stopping point for the canal and stage coach line. It was later known as the Freeman Hotel.
Helpman Home – 2
This 15-room home was built
c. 1840. John Helpman owned the lumber company that was first located on this site and then directly across the canal from his home.
Transportation History – 3
CW’s growth and prosperity has been intimately linked to transportation. The town was born around the building of the canal in the early 19th century. The interurban linked the village to surrounding areas in the early 20th century.
Bailey Home – 4
This home was built c. 1926 by Horace Bailey. It was the long time home of his daughter, Mary Lucinda Bailey, who spent many years as an educator in Canal Winchester.
Stradley Home – 5
The left side, first floor of this home is the original log cabin on the property, dating to the early 1830’s. It was expanded in the 1840’s. It is one of the oldest homes in Canal Winchester.
O. P. Chaney Home – 6
This was the site of the first frame building in Canal Winchester – a tavern which burned in the 1830’s. O. P. Chaney acquired the property c. 1853 and built this Italianate-influenced home in 1866.
